Car Over Embankment After Crash

On July 7th, 2024 at approximately 2:48pm, Central Coast, Yachats and Seal Rock Fire were called to a two vehicle crash on Highway 34 at the Nelson Wayside intersection. Central Coast fire was first onscene and discovered one car in the westbound lane and another car over the embankment on the Northside of the Highway. Moments later Chief Mason arrived and assumed incident command of the scene.

One of the cars that was traveling west bound on Highway 34, attempted to turn left from the highway onto Nelson Wayside Drive and struck another car causing it to spin around and come to a rest on the Northside of the roadway over the edge of the embankment and slightly in the water.

Because of the distance down the embankment and angle, the Lincoln County Technical Rescue Team was called in for assistance. Members of the team from North Lincoln Fire Rescue , Siletz Valley RFPD , Toledo Oregon Fire & Rescue , Newport Fire Department arrived onscene along with Newport Fire Departments Ladder Truck.

The highway was closed for approximately an hour and a half while rescue operations took place resulting in Pacific West Ambulance transporting one patient to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport. Oregon Department of Transportation Incident Response assisted at the scene with traffic and Highway clearing while Oregon State Police did their preliminary investigation. The exact cause of the accident still remains under investigation.
