The National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory in effect from 7pm this evening through Thursday. Wind chills, which is what it will feel like is expected to be around 10-20 degrees. Actual lows will be in the mid to upper 20's. These extreme cold temperatures could cause hypothermia on unprotected skin. Those planning to venture outdoors should use common sense and dress warmly, making sure exposed skin is properly covered to prevent frostbite and/or hypothermia. Rain is expected in the forecast tonight. This will create freezing rain and possible snow. Wind will be between 11-25mph.
Drivers should use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves. Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water. Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside. Avoid being outdoors in wet conditions which can increase the risk of the body cooling down and becoming hypothermic.
In Lincoln County we have two shelters for those who are unhoused to help protect them during these cold temperature snaps. The Lincoln County Community Shelter and Resource Center is open in Newport and Lincoln City nightly. Check in is from 6pm to 7pm nightly. This is a safe affirming space for all including those who have pets. The Newport location is at the 1st presbyterian church 227 NE 12TH street and the Lincoln City location is at 2125 NW Highway 101. Those who would like to make a donation to help the program can call 541-270-1005.
