DA Wallace Addresses Concerns To Board of Commissioners

Writer: Kiera MorganKiera Morgan

Lincoln County District Attorney Jenna Wallace spoke during public comment at the last board of commissioners. She told commissioners that three minutes was not enough time to describe the challenges she has faced internally during her last nine months she has been in office. She said she has wondered daily when she would stop paying for the sins of her predecessor and start being recognized and respected as the elected district attorney of Lincoln County. She inquired when she would be given true latitude to start making decisions for her office that have no budgetary impact. She asked that county employees stop signing documents on her behalf without her knowledge.

Wallace said her emails are being read by human resources and county council. She also noted that $34,000 was secretly deducted from her budget. She told the commissioners that they have allowed Kristen Yule and David Collier to block her, stop her and attempt to silence her. Commissioner Hall stopped Wallace and reminded her that the guidelines for public comment say there will be no personal attacks. Wallace awknowledged and said when she asked for something to be done and conduct an investigation she said she was told by the human resources director if she did not stop voicing her concerns she would be under investigation. She praised Commissioner Miller for working to promote transparency and equality in policy and procedure for all Lincoln County employees including elected officials.

Commission Chair Hall stated “The board has had collaborative relationships with former District Attorneys Bovett, Brannam and Cable. That changed under the previous D.A., who threatened us and displayed unprofessional conduct in response to the county's obligation to provide oversight of county personnel and spending. I'm sad that our current district attorney is continuing this pattern. We're asking her to follow the same process laid out in our employment rules, bargaining agreements, and employment laws. Instead, we've seen an ongoing effort to circumvent these rules and public tantrums when the county upholds rules and laws it's obligated to follow.”

Wallace added in her statement that when this kind of thing happens it pulls her away from the work she is doing to protect crime victims and seek justice. Wallace said she is hopeful that, with Commissioner Chuck coming onboard that her concerns will be addressed. She finished by saying she realizes that by coming forward with this information she risks further retaliation but added that she will not be run off.
