Hazmat Team Called To Investigate Smelly Substance

On Thursday September 5th just after 1:30pm North Lincoln Fire and Rescue Crews (NLFR) were dispatched to a report of a “gas leak” in the area of Hwy 101 and West Devils Lake Rd. On arrival crews didn’t find a gas leak, but they did find a bag broken open in the roadway with a white powder coming out of it. The powder had a strong smell. Crews backed away and closed down West Devils Lake Road and requested additional units and the Regional State Hazmat team from Salem Fire Department.

Once the Hazmat team arrived, they tested the substance, which turned out to be naphthalene, a chemical commonly found in mothballs. Once given the all clear from the hazmat team, the substance was cleaned up and the road was reopened. In all, West Devils Lake Road was closed for a little over four hours during the investigation NLFR would like to remind drivers to ensure their loads are secure while driving.
