The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory and red flag warning starting Tuesday July 4-Wednesday July 5 at 7pm. Maximum temperatures in the upper 80s to mid-90s expected Tuesday. These temperatures are expected to occur again Wednesday afternoon east of the Coast Range crest. Hot temperatures may cause heat illnesses to occur Temperatures may approach 100 degrees Tuesday afternoon for Coast Range valley locations in Lane County, such as Veneta and Alsea. Increasing sea breeze will bring cooler marine air into the coastal valleys Wednesday afternoon, spreading inland Wednesday evening.
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Red Flag Warning:
Winds - North winds 6 to 10 mph with gusts up to 25 mph this afternoon through much of tonight. Winds decreasing Wednesday morning, then becoming west 6 to 10 mph with gusts to 25 mph Wednesday afternoon.
Relative Humdity - Minimum RH 10 to 18 percent Tuesday afternoon, then 18 to 28 percent Wednesday afternoon. Humidity recovery will be poor (35 to 45 percent) Tuesday night along and above thermal belts.
Impacts - Conditions may be favorable for rapid spread on any new or existing fires. Extreme fire behavior is possible, especially from established fires. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
Precautionary/Preparedness Actions:
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of the above conditions can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
Check with your local fire agency to see whether burning and/or firework restrictions are in place. Even if burning is legal, do not leave any type of fire unattended.
