Intoxicated Driver Takes Out Power Poles


On 7/28/20 at approximately 4:04 AM, Oregon State Police received a report of a single vehicle crash that occurred on Hwy-18 MP 7 on a report of a car that had collided with a Pacific Power Utility Pole, which was connected to another utility pole across the roadway. Both utility poles were damaged. A silver Honda CRV was traveling west on Hwy-18, when it drove into the oncoming lane of travel and into the utility pole on the eastbound shoulder. The car then rolled down a 30ft embankment and came to an uncontrolled rest upside down in a creek.


Pacific Power and North Lincoln Fire Dept. were on scene prior to State Police Trooper Taylor's arrival. The driver, identified as 29-year old Julie A McKuhn told a Pacific Power worker, that she was coming from the Casino in Grand Ronde going to her house in Depoe Bay, and she had alcoholic beverages. The worker also mentioned a strong odor of alcohol coming from McKuhn. She was transported to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital due to her injuries.


Trooper Taylor followed up with McKuhn at the hospital, and view a toxicology report provided by the hospital staff. The driver had a Blood Alcohol Content of 0.184%. She reportedly admitted to trooper Taylor, that she was drinking alcohol prior to the crash. Signs of impairment were observed. A Blood sample was preserved at the hospital for a search warrant, and a secondary blood sample was obtained via consent from the driver. The investigation is currently on-going.
