King Tides are the highest of the year’s high tides that occur when the moon is new or full and particularly close to the earth. King Tides can cause water levels to rise significantly above the normal high tide average, resulting in coastal flooding, beach erosion, and property damage. King Tides are expected to happen in November and December of 2023 and January of 2024 on the Oregon Coast. The first of the King tides is taking place this weekend November 25-27, 2023.
The public is invited to participate in the Oregon King Tides Project by taking pictures of areas impacted by king tides and sharing your photos online at https://www.oregonkingtides.net/. Be safe when on beaches and never turn your back on the ocean. Photos can be posted at Oregon King Tides dot net.All beachgoers in the Pacific Northwest are encouraged to exercise heightened caution for sneaker waves during the upcoming King Tides this weekend and for the remainder of the winter. The Coast Guard and National Weather Service are urging the public who visit coastal beaches during King Tides to be on alert for dangerous surf and potentially fatal sneaker waves.
