According to Yachats Fire on August 18, 2024, at 4:40 PM, Yachats, Central Coast, and Seal Rock fire districts were all dispatched to the Yachats State Recreation Area for two females in the river struggling to get back to shore. While units were responding, additional information indicating that a male had entered the water in an attempt to assist the struggling individual was received.
Shortly after arriving, Yachats Fire personnel, with assistance from a bystander, were able to rescue two females by lifting them from the water to the rocks at the southern area of the recreation site. Both of these subjects were wearing personal flotation devices. Fire crews had intermittent visual contact with something in the water, but it was too far from shore to be positively identified.
A female bystander entered the water to attempt to search for the male subject, despite firefighters ordering her to refrain from doing so. After swimming against the current for some time, she was able to make it back towards the shore, and personnel deployed a rope throw bag, which she was able to take hold of. Crews pulled her back to the shore. She was later arrested by Oregon State Police for interfering with firefighters.
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter, ground crew, and 2 motor life boats responded to assist with the search. Fire crews left the scene at 6:35 PM, with US Coast Guard resources continuing to search. The man is presumed to be deceased.
