On Sunday June 21st Oregon State Police responded to several crashes on Hwy 18. At 5:35 am State Police were dispatched to a crash at milepost 8. The vehicle involved was a blue Dodge ram pickup. When state police Trooper Taylor arrived on scene the driver of of the pickup, identified as 23-year old Brenton J. Vanderkooy of Hermiston, reported he was on his way to work traveling east, and fell asleep while driving. He was negotiating a curve, when he drove off the road and collided with a Pacific Power Utility Pole. The truck then traveled several more feet into some trees, and came to an uncontrolled rest. Fire and Medics were on scene prior to Trooper Taylor's arrival, and the Mr. Vanderkooy was transported to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital. OSP followed up with the driver at the hospital to evaluate injuries, and issue citations for fail to drive within lane, and for driving while suspended.
At approximately 11:49 AM Trooper Taylor responded to a reported four car collision near the Rose Lodge Market. Upon arrival, there were two separate crashes that occurred in the same location. This first collision involved two vehicles, a black Kia Soul was traveling west on Hwy 18 in front of Rose Lodge Market, when a white Ford F-150 attempted to turn left out of the parking lot. The truck clipped the Kia on the rear passenger side quarter panel causing the bumper to be removed due to the impact. Both vehicles were able to drive off the roadway and come to a controlled rest. The drivers exchanged information and drove from the scene. Trooper Taylor arrived on scene at 12:20 PM, and requested the driver of the truck, identified as 49-year old Paul B. Womack of Lebanon, return to the scene. Both parties were given DMV crash forms, and Womack was warned for Failure of driver entering roadway to yield right of way. No occupants were injured, and both vehicles were derivable.
State Police Trooper Quinten at 12:20 responded to another crash on hwy 18. The three car crash also happened right near the Rose Lodge Market. While travelling in heavy traffic, the driver of a Toyota Camry was stopped due to traffic and was Subaru BRZ rear ended by the driver of a Subaru BRZ, then a Honda Pilot rear ended the Subaru. No Injuries were reported in scene. No citations were issued.
