The City of Newport’s Community Development Director Derrick Tokos and Police Chief Jason Malloy will visit with the Nye Neighborhood Association on Thursday, Feb. 13, to discuss the city’s paid parking program. The meeting will be held at Newport’s Performing Arts Center at 5:30 p.m., and is open to all community members. Tokos and Malloy will discuss the program’s expansion into the Nye Beach neighborhood, including potential locations, rates, and implementation dates.
Newport introduced paid parking on the Bayfront in May, 2024, over four years after the City Council authorized the city to implement metered and paid parking programs in select districts, including Nye Beach. The goal was to help improve and promote parking turnover in public areas where spaces are full or nearly full during peak periods.
Through the program’s first six months on the Bayfront, net parking revenue exceeded $330,000, largely through over 110,000 transactions at pay stations and mobile pay stations. Based on a number of factors, it is estimated that parking spaces became available approximately 10 minutes more frequently than before the program began, successfully creating greater opportunity for Newport residents, business and visitors in the area.
All collected funds from metered and permit parking are placed into the city’s Public Parking Fund, which is utilized toward improvements and enforcement in public spaces exclusively in Newport’s paid parking districts. For the most up-to-date information on Newport’s paid parking program, community members are encouraged to attend the city’s monthly Parking Advisory Committee Meetings at City Hall or watch live online.
