Newport Fishermen's Wives Homeport Dinner

The Newport Fishermen’s Wives are holding their homeport dinner this Saturday July 27th at Foulweather Trawl at the Port’s International Terminal. This is a tradition that started many years ago as Newport Fishermen’s Wives held a soiree for the fishing community to come together and honor their own. This stopped for a few years but the Fishermen’s Wives picked it up again a few years ago when they wanted to honor an important member of the fishing community and a big part of the Fishermen’s Wives program Sara Skamsar, who passed away in 2021. They held a memorial to honor and remember Sara at Foulweather Trawl, the company she ran making fishing nets for many years.

Newport Fishermen’s Wives President Becca Bostwick said they knew it was time to bring back the event and picked a time in the summer to have a Homeport Dinner. “There is never a good time to hold events for fishermen as there is always a busy season, and there are different season openers throughout the year. But we picked a date when people can come together and have a positive event to celebrate and appreciate our industry partners and the fishermen for all their hard work. We couldn’t be the organization that we are and the fishing community couldn’t be who they are without each other.” This is an evening to get together and celebrate with everybody.

This year there are six who are being honored, including Ginny Goblirsch, Jim Cline with Rogue, Nick Edwards, Bob Eder, Nanci Cooper and Dean Fleck from Englund Marine. “These men and women have been huge supporters of the fishing industry and the Fishermen’s Wives," added Bostwick.  This year’s event is being catered by La Maison. There will be an appetizer cookoff, “The Battle of the Bay”, featuring four local restaurants Myrl, Local Ocean, Georgies and Mo’s vying for the title of best appetizer. There will also be live music from Harlan Rivers and a cocktail hour with Beer donated by Rogue plus wine and champagne. Bostwick said “we have a tremendous amount of incredible silent auction items donated by local supporters.”

After the awards presentations the evening will wrap up with a dessert dash. Every table will pull their money together and the table that has the highest amount gets to go first and dash to choose their items first. The event is open to the public and tickets can be purchased online at https://www.newportfishermenswives.com/about-2 Sponsors for the Homeport Dinner include Foulweather Trawl, Englund Marine, Oregon Coast Bank, Pacific Seafood, Port of Newport and NW Natural.
