
Newport Police Chief Jason Malloy presented a letter of commendation to recognize the outstanding performance and contributions of Officer Jaden Welsh. On November 27, 2024, Officer Welsh responded to NW 15th Street in Newport on a report of a disturbance where two people were fighting. Upon arrival, she contacted a 67-year-old male, who had been seriously assaulted. The victim showed signs of assault and was having difficulty breathing. Officer Welsh requested a medical response and talked with the victim; showing compassion and concern.
While she talked with the victim, his physical condition began to rapidly deteriorate. Officer Welsh requested an expedited medical response and provided basic aid, and attempted to make the victim comfortable. Medical personnel arrived on scene and began life saving measures. Unfortunately, resuscitation efforts were eventually terminated. Chief Malloy noted that while the outcome in this situation is not the desired one, it does not dismiss Officer Welsh’s performance and conduct. He added that her diligence, perseverance, and devotion to duty are most heartily commended and are in keeping with the highest traditions and core values of the Newport Police Department.
68-year old Mark Rodgers was at the victims house and was described by witnesses as intoxicated and belligerent. Officers learned Rodgers had struck the victim repeatedly with a closed fist in the face and body. Rodgers, was arrested and taken into custody and lodged at the Lincoln County Jail on charges of Murder 2 and Assault 2.
