Social Security Phone Scam

Local police agencies have recently been contacted by concerned citizens regarding phone calls reporting to be from Social Security Representatives. If you receive one of these calls *HANG UP IMMEDIATELY*. Do not be fooled by spoofing efforts, in which the caller makes the Social Security’s national customer service number appear on the caller ID space.

Please watch the video with the link below from the Social Security Administration and follow these tips:

• Never wire money to a prepaid debit card to pay for any government service. • Consider leaving your Social Security card at home in a safe place. If you lose your wallet, you can lose your identity. • The same principals hold if someone tries to reach you via email or social media. • Report suspected fraud by calling the Office of the Inspector General at 800-269-0271 or online at oig.ssa.gov/report.
