State Police Cite Illegal Hunters


On 10/31/21 State Police Trooper Bryan Fitch was conducting a buck deer wildlife enforcement decoy operation on Murphy Road before legal shooting light, a vehicle stopped, the male passenger, identified as 38-year old Christopher L. Box exited and shot the buck deer decoy, one time, from the roadway while their vehicle headlights illuminated the deer. The passenger got back into the car and it began driving away. A short distance down the road the vehicle was intercepted and the occupants were contacted. Box reportedly admitted to shooting the decoy and was criminally cited for Unlawful Take of Buck Deer, Hunting Prohibited Hours, and Hunting From or Across Highway. His rifle was seized as evidence. The driver was cited criminally for Aiding in a Wildlife Offense.


On 10/25/21 State Police Trooper Likens was notified of a subject that shot a buck deer at their residence. The complainant reported that the residence was located within a residential community in the city limits of Waldport. The subject was contacted and it was verified that they had harvested a forked horn black tail buck deer on their property on 10/24/21 at approximately 3:00pm and their residence was in fact located within the city limit boundary. The subject was criminally cited and released for Take/Possession of Buck Deer and Hunting Prohibited Area: City Limits. They were warned for Reckless Endangering due to the close proximity of surrounding houses and a public roadway. The buck deer was seized and donated to a local foodbank.


State Police Trooper Fitch was conducting another buck deer wildlife enforcement decoy operation on Murphy Road on 10/23/21 before legal shooting light, a vehicle stopped, the female passenger, identified as 31-year old Courtney Mager exited and shot the buck deer decoy, one time, from the roadway while their vehicle headlights illuminated the deer. She got back into the truck and it took off at a high rate of speed, disappearing before Fish and Wildlife officers could intercept the vehicle. About an hour later, the vehicle was located, still in the area, and the occupants were contacted. Megar was criminally cited for Unlawful Take of Buck Deer, Hunting Prohibited Hours, and Hunting With Artificial Light and her rifle was seized as evidence. The driver was cited criminally for Aiding in a Wildlife Offense.
