Summer Reading Kicks Off At The Libraries

Summer in Newport means foggy sunshine, time spent outdoors, and time for READING! Newport Public Library offers Summer Reading programs for all ages, so everyone can get involved, from babies, to kids and teens, to adults. Summer Reading sign-ups began June 1. Our nine weeks’ worth of programs are designed to encourage children and teens to make reading a fun priority this summer.

"Reading is our gateway to other worlds, other people’s life experiences, fact and fiction. For children especially, reading can engage the imagination." says Linda Annable, Children’s Services Supervisor. Research indicates that students who do not read over the

summer can lose up to one month of learning, resulting in a learning setback when school begins in the fall.

That's why stocking up on reading materials over the summer is so important. In addition to a variety of materials for children to read and listen to, Newport Public Library offers fun and educational events weekly including storytimes, and programs in Literacy Park.

Our Literacy Park programming includes performers who dance, sing, tell stories, inspire, and captivate. We again feature favorites such as Rhys Thomas with “Jugglemania”, and the Creatures Teachers with live animals.

Be sure to sign up and get a list of all the programs and performers at the Newport Public Library. The Library's summer program for children ages birth to 5 years include twice weekly ToddlerTime and Preschool Storytimes and Wednesday performances at 1:00 p.m.

“A Universe of Stories” is for children 0-5 years of age. They get a chance to count the hours they are read to.

After completing a reading chart, our youngest participants will receive a book bag, magnetic picture frame and a painting page. "A Universe of Stories” is for children ages 5 - 12 years. Children set their own goal for how many books they’ll read or listen to this summer. When the goal is reached, the reader receives a free t-shirt sponsored by the Newport Public Library Foundation.

"A Universe of Stories” is for teens ages 12 to 18 (or those just finishing 6-12 grades). Teens track their reading to earn raffle tickets for weekly prize drawings. Teen Third Thursday programs will continue throughout the summer with interesting things to do, make and learn. This program will end in August with a Grand Prize drawing.

Summer reading isn’t just for kids! This summer the Library will be holding a reading rewards program for grown-ups 19 and older! Stop by the library to sign up and get a reading log. For every book (or eBook or audiobook) you read, fill out a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of our weekly prize drawings for fantastic literary gift baskets!
