On Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at about 5:03 PM, Lincoln City Police responded to a reported single vehicle motor vehicle crash near SW Coast Ave. Upon officers’ arrival they found the crash involved a black 2006 Hyundai sedan, which was laying on its driver’s side in the middle of the road.
The driver of the Hyundai was at the scene and was identified as 24-year-old Jacob Wheeler of Lincoln City. Mr. Wheeler had some apparent injuries to his face, but he was uncooperative with medical personnel from North Lincoln Fire & Rescue and Pacific West Ambulance who had arrived on scene. Wheeler was eventually transported to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital for further medical evaluation and treatment.
The crash investigation revealed that the Hyundai was eastbound on SW 24th Dr when it struck an embankment causing it to roll over onto its side. The driver, Jacob Wheeler, was able to get himself out of the rolled over vehicle, and according to witnesses, he started to walk away from the scene.
Witnesses kept Wheeler at the scene until police and medical personnel arrived. During the scene investigation, Wheeler showed signs of impairment and officers developed probable cause to believe that Wheeler was operating his vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants at the time of the crash. Because Wheeler had been transported to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital, a search warrant for Wheeler’s blood was obtained and later served at the hospital. The blood sample obtained will be sent to the Oregon State Police Crime Lab for analysis and determination of the alcohol content in his blood.
Once the blood analysis report is completed, it will be submitted with the investigation report to Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office for their review and determination of specific criminal charges. The Lincoln City Police would like to thank North Lincoln Fire & Rescue and Pacific West Ambulance for their assistance with this incident.
