City of Newport Parks and Recreation recently received a financial boost from donors to help

fund the recently completed ultraviolet (UV) light filtration system at the Newport Aquatics

Center The Friends of Newport Parks and Recreation, Inc recently received over $17,000 in funding from the Newport Rotary Club, Newport Booster Club, Newport Swim Club, and several private donations. Those funds will be combined with previous donations of $14,000 from the Friends of the Aquatic Park and $5,000 from Lincoln County School District (LCSD).

“We are just grateful for the community support on this project. From the support of LCSD and

former Superintendent Karen Gray to the Newport Swim Club to Newport Rotary and Newport

Booster Club, we are extremely thankful to have amazing partners that help make our

community a better place. The funds that were received will be used to offset the purchase of

the UV filtration system which was made by the City of Newport,” said Parks and Recreation

Director Mike Cavanaugh.

Overall, swimming pool sanitation has improved over the years and using a UV system is a

much healthier option for pool users. UV systems are installed as secondary sanitation systems for pools which lowers chlorine usage, eliminates chloramines, and lowers operating costs. Swimming pools can be a breeding ground for bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens, and high bather loads in public pools can easily overwhelm the typical chlorine disinfection system. The Newport Aquatic Center serves a wide range of populations, many of whom come to the facility for therapy or to enjoy a low-impact form of exercise. Many patrons can be particularly sensitive to the effects of chlorine on skin, eyes, and lungs.

UV systems work in conjunction with chlorine, completely eliminating chloramines from the air and water. “This new system will create a safer, cleaner and overall healthier swimming experience for all of our patrons,” said Keeley Naughton, Aquatic Center Supervisor.
