State Police Trooper Katsikis responded to a driving complaint in the Waldport area involving a white Ford Explorer. The trooper located the described car parked in the Keady Wayside parking lot. After observing the car for a short time it went mobile in the parking lot and drove over a curb and nearly onto the seawall. Trooper Katsikis conducted a traffic stop in the parking lot and recognized the car and driver as the suspect in a DUII investigation conducted by Newport Police Department approximately 18 hours earlier, where the driver was taken into custody for DUII.
The driver, identified as 39-year old Daniel R. Chewning of Waldport was visibly intoxicated and smelled strongly of alcohol. There were open containers of alcohol in plain sight in the car. Mr. Chewning refused to perform safety field sobriety test's but reportedly admitted freely he was intoxicated. He was taken into custody and transported to Lincoln County Jail where he consented to a breath test rendering a result of .26 Blood Alcohol Content, over three times the legal limit. He was lodged in Lincoln County Jail on charges of DUII - Alcohol and Reckless Driving. He was also charged with the violations of Driving While Suspended, Driving Uninsured, Open Container of Alcohol and Failing to Install and Ignition Interlock Device. The car was impounded.
