At 8:50am on March 16, 2020 the Newport waste water treatment plant recorded a positive test for fecal coliform bacteria in the effluent stream that exceeded the permit requirement of 406 CFU/100ml. Wastewater treatment plant personnel have taken corrective action and will continue to test for bacteria. Newport wastewater is discharged into the ocean approximately 330 yards off of Nye beach. Signs warning of the bacterial exceedance are posted at the affected areas and sampling is being conducted to determine when the water is safe for contact. Contact with water contaminated with bacteria can increase the risk of disease. Please avoid contact with these waterbodies until further notice. Please contact the City of Newport Public Works at 541-574-3366 with any questions.
