Commercial fishing vessels are gearing up for the ultimate wild seafood culinary battle on Saturday, July 23 when the Port of Newport hosts the $10,000 Newport Wild Seafood Cook-Off . Tickets are now on sale for this one of a kind culinary event in the entire country. Only 600 tickets will be sold. Proceeds will support the important work of Newport Fishermen’s Wives, which assists families that have lost a loved one at sea. The group also uses its resources on outreach programs to deliver food, clothing, and other immediate needs to fishing families. Scholarships, funding for emergencies, and other services to support the
commercial fishing industry are all part of their vital mission.
The event will put a new spin on an old classic when fishing vessel crew members and friends serve up their best wild seafood dish in hopes of bagging a part of the $10,000 prize money. The venue for the event will be Port Dock 7 on Newport’s Historic Bayfront, located next to the site where the Port’s new administration building is under construction. This home cook amateur competition is divided into four divisions: crab, albacore, salmon, and trawl (rockfish,
sole, pink shrimp). Each team will be provided with their seafood, thanks to generous donations from the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission, the Oregon Albacore Commission, the Oregon Salmon Commission, and the Oregon Trawl Commission.
For the price of admission, those in attendance can expect to sample up to 20 different seafood creations. To purchase tickets go to the Newport Fishermen's Wives website at newportfishermenswives.com. Tickets are $25 per adult (+service fee) or $30 at the door, if any tickets remain. Youth (15 & under) are $15, children (6 & under) free. Presenting sponsors of the $10,000 Newport Wild Seafood Cook-Off are the Port of Newport, First Interstate
Bank, Pacific Seafood, Rogue Brewery and Safeway.
